025 - Two Frames of Onboarding | Maintenance Mindset

Onboarding Success: Preparing Your New Maintenance Team Member for Day One Is your onboarding process setting your team up for success — or failure? Let’s discuss what a powerful first day looks like. Welcome to Maintenance Mindset. Today we’re digging into a crucial but often overlooked topic — onboarding your maintenance team members. Industry-wide turnover rates are over 50%! This may not come as a shock if you have been working with a short staff. Such a staggering statistic emphasizes how important it is for the hiring manager to ensure new team members feel supported from Day One. Let’s explore key steps to take before the first day of work. Create a pre-start checklist to make the transition smooth: provide access to systems and workspace, order uniforms and name badge, ensure new hire paperwork is in order (high priority: do what it takes to make sure they will get paid!), order some company/property swag as a welcome gift, set them up in required training modules, and assign a mentor. Consider this from the new employee’s perspective. What do they need to know to show up prepared and ready to succeed in a brand-new environment? What are the access requirements – especially those high-rise, limited parking, key card required properties? What is appropriate to wear? Does the company provide full uniforms or just shirts? What type of work shoes are required? Are tennis shoes okay? From company culture introductions to safety gear setup, this episode offers a roadmap to ensure your new team members feel welcomed, ready, empowered, and engaged right from the start.
